Does Semi-Permanent Makeup Hurt? Here’s What You Need to Know

One of the most common questions I get at Caterpillar Brow Bar is about the pain level of semi-permanent makeup. It’s a fair question, after all, we’re talking about a face tattoo, and that can sound a little intimidating at first.
The truth? It’s nowhere near as painful as people expect. Most clients are surprised by how comfortable the process is. On a typical pain scale of 1 to 10, most say it’s a 1 or 2 at most, and some even take a quick nap while we work.
Before we start, I apply a topical numbing cream to the area. This helps dull any initial sensitivity. Then, throughout the procedure, I continuously reapply numbing to keep you comfortable from start to finish. The goal is always a relaxing experience, not one you have to power through.
Every service, whether it’s powder brows, ombré brows, or a lip blush tattoo, is performed with precision and care. The tools and pigments we use are designed for delicate facial skin, making it a completely different experience from a traditional body tattoo.
Many clients tell me they expected it to feel intense, but leave saying they felt nothing at all. Others even say it’s more relaxing than getting their eyebrows waxed or threaded.
So, if you’ve been curious about permanent makeup but nervous about the pain, you can take a deep breath. The discomfort is minimal to none, and the confidence boost that comes with waking up to ready-to-go brows or soft, natural lip color makes it completely worth it.
At Caterpillar Brow Bar, we make beauty effortless, comfortable, and long-lasting, because looking good shouldn’t hurt.
